Surviving the Mic

Surviving the Mic is a safe space performance series for survivors of trauma. It is open to anyone with mic priority given to survivors of sexual and/or domestic violence. We're open to folks 14 and up.

Surviving the Mic is a safe space, meaning that the audience is expected to listen with compassion and all boundaries must be respected, especially physical. Consent should never be presumed, especially when it comes to touching. It’s better to ask and feel awkward, than not ask and trigger.

We have volunteer first responders that attend every open mic. Nikki Patin, the founder of Surviving the Mic, hosts it every month and she is an Illinois state-certified Crisis Counselor.

We want this to be a space where people can be vulnerable but we also want to care for and respect that vulnerability. The intention is to give space to people speaking poetry to power, telling the truths they need to tell.

We are LGBTQ friendly and accessible.

BRETT WHITACRE // WAVE THEORIES

Cup & Spoon and DreamBox Gallery proudly present Brett Whitacre's WAVE THEORIES as part of the WOW Frequency Summer Series.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1593817657565343/

Brett Whitacre is a self taught and colorblind artist living and working in Northern Illinois. He has been producing works in the reverse glass painting technique for 12 years.

Upon moving to Chicago in 2001, he began walking, biking, and driving the alleyways of the city seeking various discarded materials to use as a canvas. Pre-digital televisions, hard shell luggage, and storm windows were his favorite finds.

Settling on his love for the crispness and pristine of paint on glass, found window panes became his main focus. Brett's work today is on windows but also tempered glass panels for a more modern feel.

The subject matter varies greatly as his interests are broad. When asked why he paints what he does, he'll say "All these things are really cool...I like em".

Opening reception of Point of View by IRENA SIWEK

For nearly twenty years, Irena Siwek has followed her passion for pen and ink drawings. Her distinctive self-taught perspective contributes to the creative authenticity of her work, which is intriguing, engaging and introspective. Subjects of marionettes, human and animal forms are reoccurring themes in Siwek’s work, through which she explores how we coexist within the world of interdependence.

This exhibition offers a unique view of an expressive impulse of an artist to break down the boundaries between an idea and a drive to create. Within countless hours spend in the repetition of line and its movement, her drawings transform dense graphical patterns by the use of kaleidoscopic arrays of forms: lines, objects, circles, dots and curves.

“The movement of my hand subconsciously creates the form. Each stroke inspires the next… in return a certain flow is created… an absolute connection between my thoughts, feelings and the movement of my hand.”

Irena Siwek was born in Poland and moved to United States in 1992. She studied at Dominican University (River Forest, IL) and received a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1997. Her work has been a part of many group exhibitions including the Polish Museum of America and it is well supported by private collectors.

AS ON EARTH, SO IN HEAVEN: An Exploration of Lake Michigan by James DiGilio

Inspired by the vastness of the landscape, DiGilio made routine, often daily, visits to the shores of Lake Michigan over the course of one year.

Through this body of work, he places strong visual emphasis on the horizon line, the point in space where objects come and go from sight, and even further conceptual emphasis on defining the almighty by means of appreciating the natural world.

Two years after the completion of the project, these images and ideas culminated into "As on Earth, So in Heaven", a photographic experience that unites image, writing, and sound.
